Nothing BEETS science class!
Grade 10 science students were learning why cells are small. Small cells have large surface area/volume ratios. Large cells have small surface area/volume ratios. The beets of different sizes (3 cm cube, 2 cm cube, 1 cm cube) were placed in bleach for 30 minutes. They were then removed and cut in half to see how far the bleach diffused into the cell. It was always 0.5 mm. The small cell turned mostly white with bleach, while the large cell had relatively little volume bleached as it would have received very little nutrients. Students had to use their mathematics skills to calculate volume and surface area to see their results.
