Do I need a PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) for my study permit or visa application?

No. Students applying to secondary schools like Braemar College do not need a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL). PALs are required only for most post-secondary (college and university) programs. As a secondary-level institution, Braemar College is exempt from this requirement.

 

What type of study permit do I need?

A: International students must hold a valid Canadian study permit to study full-time at Braemar College. You can apply for a study permit once you receive your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from us.

 

Can Braemar College help me with my study permit application?

Braemar College can provide the documents you need (such as your Letter of Acceptance and Payment Invoice Receipt).
However, the visa and study permit application must be submitted by the student. We recommend reviewing official guidelines on the Government of Canada Immigration website.

 

What documents do I need to apply to Braemar College?

To apply, you will need:

• Completed  Application – Braemar College

• Copy of your Passport

• Most recent school transcripts or report cards

Once your application is approved, you will receive a Pre-Letter of Acceptance and invoice.

 

How long does it take to receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA)?

Once we receive your completed application and payment, the LOA is usually issued within 1-2 business days.

 

What should I do if my visa is refused?

If your visa study permit application is refused, and you wish for a refund, please send a copy of the refusal letter and complete the Refund Application Form – Braemar College.  Our Admissions Office will review your case and advise on next steps.

Please be reminded that the 300 CAD registration fee is non-refundable.

Can we pay in USD?

Yes, payments can be made in U.S. Dollars (USD).

Can I stay at the student residence?

Yes, students who are 18 years of age or older may stay in student residences located quite closely to the school. For more information about availability, fees, and application details, please contact our Student Services Department at studentservice@braemarcollege.com.

Homestay FAQ

How far are the homestays from the school?

In general, our students travel between 30 minutes to 60 minutes when coming to school.

 

What if I don’t like my homestay?
It’s important that Braemar students feel comfortable and welcome and their homestays. If after arrival a student would like to look at other homestays options, that is no problem. Students can change homestays as soon as the next day, during the first two weeks after a placement, and with two-weeks’ notice after the first two weeks.

 

 

How does Braemar select its homestays?
Braemar College follows a strict protocol when accepting a new homestay into its network. The steps include an interview, a physical inspection of the homestay, a demand for references, and the requirement of a recent police record check.

 

 

How long is a Braemar term?

Terms 1 to 4 last 9 weeks, while Term 5 lasts 6 weeks.

 

 

What is Braemar College’s Fast-Track term system?

The Fast-Track term system was developed by Braemar College in 1995 to better meet the needs of international students. Braemar College does not have semester; instead, Braemar has four 9-week terms in the academic year, plus a shortened academic term in the summer.

 

What are the advantages of the Fast-Track term system?

• The Fast-Track term system allows students to start five times in any year: September, November, February, April and July.
• The Fast-Track term system allows students to focus on two courses at once.
• The Fast-Track term system is more flexible for students who are first applying for a study permit. If they cannot make the program in time for the start of the program in September, for instance, they can come in November, whereas in a program with semesters they would have to wait until February.
• The Fast-Track term system allows students to advance four levels in any discipline (ESL, Math, etc.) in the academic year, compared to only two levels in a school with semesters. For instance, a student who is in ESL A in a school with semesters would need two full years to complete ESL D. With the Fast-Track term system, this same student could complete ESL level A to level D in only one academic year.

 

 

 

Can I take more than two courses per term?

It is recommended that students take two courses per time so that they have enough time to complete their lessons, assignments, and readings. If a student is able to achieve good grades, they may be allowed to take three courses per term.

 

Can I take only one course next term?

Full time Braemar students should take two courses per term, but they may be allowed to take one course depending on the circumstance. Please email guidance@braemarcollege.com for more clarification.

 

What are my graduation requirements?

All students will need to take 30 credits to earn the OSSD. Some of these credits may be granted as prior equivalencies from previous schools. For university entry, grade 12 students must take six 4U or 4M courses, along with the OLC4O course or OSSLT test. A certain number of volunteer hours, ranging from 10-40 hours, will also be required. Students joining Braemar in grade 12 will only need 10 hours, while students joining in grade 9 will need 40 hours.

 

Is OLC4O a mandatory course?

The literacy course is a mandatory course for students who are studying online. In-person students can take the literacy test (OSSLT) to meet the literacy requirement.

 

How many grade 12 courses do I need to take?

Six grade 12 courses at the U or M level must be taken to meet university requirements. College requirements will vary.

 

How can I complete my volunteering if I am not in Toronto?

Students can complete their volunteer hours from wherever they are in the world. They can volunteer at their local hospital, animal shelter, elderly care home, religious organization, sports centre, environmental group, or tutoring centre, to name a few options.

 

When can I start applying for university?

If students are planning to attend university in September, they can start applying in the autumn of the preceding year. They should log into the university website to check specific application deadlines.

Do the asynchronous classes have live Zoom meetings?

No, the asynchronous classes are fully independent classes. Students will be able to log in at any time of day to work on their lessons and assignments. There will be a final deadline at the end of each nine-week term.

 

What is the difference between TVO and BOA courses?

TVO courses are taken through the TVO ILC platform, while BOA courses are taken through the Canvas platform. Both offer asynchronous online learning, and assignments are typically marked in 3-5 business days.

 

Will I be able to take a blended class next term?

Blended classes are usually offered each term, but please check with guidance to see if we are offering courses that will fit your study plan.

 

What are the course requirements for my postsecondary program?

It depends on the program you are applying to. Not all programs have the same course requirements, nor the same expectations when it comes to marks. You will need to check the “admission requirements” section of your desired university. All required and recommended courses will be listed there.

 

What is a good average for university?

While this question usually depends on the specific university program, 80+ is generally considered a good average for university, though some programs will require 90+ marks. Your grade average typically cannot be below 70%.

 

Can you explain how an online course is structured?

Generally, an online course is made up of 4-6 units with 4-8 lessons per unit. Each unit will include discussions, quizzes, and assignments. There is a final CA project and an exam at the end of most courses.

 

What are the fees for an additional online course?

You should email admissions@braemarcollege.com to find out the price of an additional course.

 

If I fail a course, what happens?

You may re-take the same course or select a different course to take. Additional fees will apply.

 

Will my failed courses show on my transcript?

If you did not sign a drop form, your failed courses will appear on your transcript.

 

How can I talk to my BOA teacher?

You can send a message to your teacher through the “Inbox” feature in Canvas.

 

How can I talk to my TVO teacher?

You can send a message through the “Chatbox feature,” which is located at the bottom of each assignment submission page. You can also send an email to teacher@tvo.org, and one of the TVO subject experts will get back to you in 3-5 business days.

 

My TVO assignments are not being graded – what should I do?

TVO assignments are graded in 2-5 business days. If it has been longer than 5 business days, check to see whether your teacher sent a resubmission request. If the feedback section is blank, please contact wan@braemarcollege.com or guidance@braemarcollege.com.

 

My BOA assignments are not being graded – what should I do?

If 5 business days have passed and your assignment is not yet graded, you should contact your teacher through the “Inbox” feature to ensure your assignment was successfully received. If your teacher is not responding, please contact wan@braemarcollege.com or guidance@braemarcollege.com.

 

I am not able to launch ProctorFree – what can I do?

Make sure that your face is clearly visible and that your internet speed it suitable. If you still cannot launch the software, contact Braemar’s online coordinator, Ms. Wanja, and she will arrange a Zoom meeting with you to troubleshoot the issue.

 

How can I take my exam on TVO?

You should log into your TVO dashboard and then click “Schedule Final Test.” Please note that your exam can only be scheduled if all preceding assignments have been marked. If your final assignment is submitted but not yet marked, you will not be able to schedule your exam.

 

Is it possible for my assignment to be re-graded?

Yes, it is possible for an assignment to be re-graded. If it is a TVO assignment, you should go to your dashboard and then click on “Request Mark Appeal.” If it is a BOA assignment, you can send a request to your teacher through the “Inbox” feature.

 

What are citations?

Citations are references to an original source of information. They will be presented in a certain style, depending on the subject of study. MLA, APA, and Chicago are examples of citation styles. Using a source without giving a proper citation is considered plagiarism.

 

How many resubmission attempts do I have?

Typically, students have one resubmission attempt per assignment, but this rule can vary across different online courses. Please check with your specific teacher. Note that previously corrected assignments cannot be resubmitted.

 

How can I get an extension on my course?

Please contact our online learning coordinator. They will send you an extension request form. You should provide a strong reason and back it up with documentation where possible.

 

 

How many courses will I need to graduate?

How many courses you will need to graduate depends on two factors:  first, the amount of high school study you have already completed; second, your math and English levels (revealed in the placement tests, if required); and third, your postsecondary goals.

 

 

Can I use A.I.to write my assignments?

No. All Braemar Students are expected to produce their own original work without A.I. Using A.I. to complete schoolwork is considered cheating and will not be tolerated.

 

 

Why do I need health insurance in Canada?

StudyInsured™ insurance pays the costs of medical services if you are unexpectedly sick or injured. Canadian law requires international students to have medical insurance. Without insurance, the cost of medical care in Canada is extremely expensive.

When does my insurance coverage start and end?

Coverage usually begins from your first day of studies and continues until the end of your program. Please check your policy or ask the school office for exact dates.

 

What should I do if I need medical help?

If it’s an emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital.
For non-emergency care, you can visit a walk-in clinic or doctor’s office. Always bring your StudyInsured ID card with you.

 

How do I make an insurance claim?

You can submit claims online through your StudyInsured account.

What English level is required?

Braemar College accepts students at any English level. Whether beginner or advanced, we have high school classes available that will meet our students needs.

 

Does Braemar College have ESL classes?

Yes, Braemar College has ESL classes as designed by the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum. This advantage of taking ESL at Braemar College rather than a language school is that upon successful complete of our ESL classes students receive internationally recognized Ontario high school credits.

 

 

If I don’t speak English well, do I have to take ESL before I start my high school courses?

Braemar College offers all levels of ESL courses in all five of our annual intakes. These courses are official high school courses, as Braemar College is a high school, not a language school. Our ESL students receive official midterm and final marks, official report cards, and Ontario high school credits which count toward the thirty credits required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).

 

 

What do I need to graduate with the OSSD?

To graduate with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), you must:

• Earn 30 Ontario high school credits (1 credit or equivalent per class)
• Pass the OSSLT (Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test) in November/ May OR Pass the OLC4O course.
• Do 40 CI hours (Community Service; 10hrs per year)
• Meet the Online Learning Requirement (2021)

 

 

Do you have any admissions test?
No, but we do have placements tests in Mathematics and English. These placement tests help us prepare the best study plan for you, so that you can meet your academic goals. Students who are transferring from other schools in Ontario do not need to complete the placement tests. Students who are native speakers, or who have studied in English for a long time, may not be required to write the English placement test.

 

 

Do you have an interview as part of the admissions process?
There is no interview required for most of our programs. Only the Toronto Pathway Program has an interview as an essential part of the admissions process. The objective of the interview for the Toronto Pathway Program is to ensure that the applicant is right for the program and will benefit from the enhanced programming and support.

 

Do you accept mid‑year transfers?

Yes, students are welcome to start all through the year. We have formal intakes in September, November, February and July. It might also be possible to transfer mid-term as a non-credit student.

 

 

If I am in Toronto, can I do a sample tryout class at Braemar College to see if I like it?
Yes, sometimes students who are in Toronto may, with the approval of the principal of Braemar College, do some try-out courses for a day or two to see how they feel. There would be no charge for these try-out classes.

 

 

How do I pay the application fee?

Usually the application fee is part of the overall invoice and is not paid separately.

 

 

How do I prepare for the Toronto Pathway interview?

Students do not need to prepare for the TPP interview. They should just be ready to answer several questions to the best of their ability.

 

 

Can parents speak with admissions staff?

How can parents see the marks of their children?

Parents of Braemar College students are encouraged to sign up for the Parent Portal. This will allow parents to see a great deal of academic information about their child, including marks and daily attendance. To do this, parents will need a special access code from the Guidance department. The link to the parent portal can be found at the bottom of our homepage.

 

 

How do I defer my start date?

What happens if my visa / study permit is refused?

If your visa or study permit is refused, you should let our admissions team know as soon as possible. In some cases it could be advisable to reapply, as there are sometimes better chances of approval

 

 

What curriculum does the Braemar College follow?

Braemar College offers the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum. This means at Braemar College we do not offer A levels, or IGCSE, or IB.

 

 

If I have already completed IGCSE’s or O Levels, what grade would I start in the Ontario Curriculum?
If you have completed IGCSE or O levels, you would likely be granted the equivalent of grade 11 in the Ontario Secondary School Curriculum, and then would complete grade 12, the final year of the Ontario Secondary Diploma, with us.

How do I pick my courses?
Students select their courses in consultation with our guidance counsellors. This ensures that students are getting exactly the courses they need to achieve the goals of their study plan.

What is an AEP?
An AEP is the short form of “Academic Education Plan”. Basically, this is a study-plan. Students get a study-plan, or the AEP, when they start studying with us. This includes the key academic data and lists all the courses the student will be taking during their time at Braemar College.

 

 

Can I change my courses?

Yes, students can change their courses. To do this, students should make an appointment with the guidance team to see what options are available. Students should keep in mind that in most students will need to satisfy certain

 

 

Can I pick my courses?

In some cases students might be able to chose among different course options available each term. Students who are studying with us in the summer program, or with us for a short-term high school program usually have the most flexibility. For students who Most of the time, however, certain courses will be required to meet diploma requirements or the admission requirements of post-secondary programs the student may be targeting.

 

 

What is the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD)?

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is the standard high school diploma in the Canadian province of Ontario. It overseen by the Ontario Ministry of Education.

 

 

How do credits work in Ontario?

In the Ontario curriculum, in most cases a credit is a course equivalent to 110 hours of instruction. To receive an OSSD, students are required to have 30 credits.

What is a typical school day like?

A typical school day at Braemar College looks like this. Students start the day with period 1 at 9:15 AM. This course goes until noon. From noon to 1 PM is the lunch break. Period 2 runs from 1 PM to 3:45 PM. Both periods have a break of 15 minutes.  At 3:45 PM students are free to go home or take part in the after-school activities like Cooking Club or Sports Night.

 

What weekend activities do students enjoy?

On occasional weekends we might have trips to Niagara Falls, Canada Wonderland, hikes at local trails, or overnight trips, like the annual retreat for Braemar student leaders.

Have you got any canteen in your school?

Braemar College does have facilities where students eat their lunch. However, this does not serve meals, as most of our students are staying with one of our homestay families and bring their own lunches to school. We do have fridges and microwaves available for our students to use.
